PTA Sets Historic 5G Spectrum Auction Today to Revolutionize Telecom Industry

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is taking a major step toward advanced digital connectivity as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) holds a historic 5G spectrum auction today 10 March, aiming to modernize the Pakistan’s telecom sector and bring faster internet services to users.

The long-awaited auction marks the beginning of Pakistan’s journey toward 5G technology, which will significally improve mobile internet speed, internet reliability and remote services accross Pakistan.

Major Telecom Companies Take Part

In this auction many major mobile operators like Jazz, Zong And Ufone take part, who showed their interest in spectrum to launch nex-generation mobile network service.

The auction is being conducted through an electronic bidding system and began at around 10:00 AM, with different frequency bands being offered to telecom companies.

Telecom operators had to submit significant upfront payments to qualify for the bidding process. Reports indicate that companies collectively deposited around Rs12 billion to take part in the auction.

Large Spectrum Release Planned

The government is offering a large amount of spectrum in multiple frequency bands, including 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz, which are widely used for 5G services worldwide.

Officials say around 597 megahertz (MHz) of spectrum will be available during the auction. This is expected to increase the capacity of Pakistan’s mobile networks and improve internet quality.

PTA sets the condition of minimum minimum purchase of 100 Megahertz (MHz) of spectrum for telecom companies.

Currently, Pakistan’s telecom system operates on limited spectrum, which oftenly causes network congestion and slower internet speeds. Increasing the available spectrum is expected to solve the slow internet speed problems.

The 5G spectrum will play a key role in economic growth, digital innovation, and technology development in Pakistan.

Although the spectrum auction is taking place today,however the public launch of 5G services may take several months.
