A group of PlayStation fans has launched a week-long boycott of Sony’s gaming platform in protest against the company’s decision to end physical game disc production for new PlayStation releases from January 2028.
The #PSBlackout campaign began on August 23 and is scheduled to continue until August 30. Participants have been encouraged to stay offline, avoid logging into PlayStation Network, refrain from playing games through PlayStation services and stop making purchases on the PlayStation Store during the protest.
Why Are PS5 Fans Boycotting Sony?
Sony announced in July that it will completely stop physical disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. After that date, new PlayStation games will be available in digital formats through the PlayStation Store and retailers. Games already released, or scheduled to release before January 2028 in physical format, will not be affected.
Sony said the decision reflects changing consumer preferences, with digital gaming now significantly more popular than physical media.
However, the announcement has affected players who prefer physical copies because of concerns about game ownership, collecting, resale and long-term access to games.
What Is the PSBlackout Campaign?
The PSBlackout campaign calls on PlayStation users to completely step away from Sony’s gaming ecosystem for seven days.
Organizers hope that a coordinated drop in PlayStation activity and spending will demonstrate how strongly some players oppose the move away from physical games. The campaign is asking participants to avoid PlayStation Network, PlayStation Store purchases and other PlayStation services during the blackout.
The campaign has also faced criticism from some gamers. Critics argue that simply keeping consoles offline may not create a significant financial impact for Sony. Some users have suggested that directly reducing spending on PlayStation games and services would send a stronger message.
Physical Disc Backlash Spreads to Game Showcases
The controversy has also appeared across PlayStation-related trailers and social media posts.
The recent Phantom Blade Zero State of Play showcase received repeated comments from fans protesting Sony’s physical-media decision. Many users used the “no disc, no buy” message to express their opposition, despite the game itself not being responsible for Sony’s decision.
Sony Continues With Its 2028 Plan
Sony has shown no indication that it will reverse the decision. The company has said the shift is part of its response to the growing popularity of digital gaming.
Sony CFO Lin Tao also said the company was moving forward with the plan cautiously after considering the broader shift toward digital content.
For now, the #PSBlackout is one of the most organized protests against Sony’s move away from physical PlayStation games. Whether the week-long boycott will have enough financial or consumer impact to influence Sony’s strategy remains to be seen.
