Karachi, April 13, 2026 — Karachi Port has achieved a major milestone in Pakistan’s maritime sector, successfully handling the largest-ever bunkering operation in its history, marking rapid progress in the country’s fuel supply and shipping infrastructure.
According to an official statement, Vitol’s bunker vessel Marine ISTA delivered 4,900 metric tons of marine fuel to a container ship operated by MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, named MSC Apollo. The vessel made a bunker-only call at Karachi Port Trust (KPT), highlighting the port’s growing capability to handle dedicated refueling operations.
Record Delivery Reflects Growing Bunkering Capacity
The latest operation builds on Pakistan’s fast-expanding marine bunkering infrastructure. Over the past year, Karachi Port has seen significant upgrades aimed at aligning with global maritime standards.
Previously, in November 2025, Marine ISTA had set a national record for delivering very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO), reinforcing its role as a key asset in Pakistan’s energy logistics. The vessel is capable of supplying up to 6,800 metric tons of fuel in a single operation, enabling large-scale refueling for international vessels.
Pakistan Expands Marine Fuel Supply Network
Earlier in 2026, Pakistan formally launched modern marine bunkering services at Karachi Port in collaboration with global energy trader Vitol. The initiative aims to supply 500,000 to 600,000 metric tons of marine fuel annually across Karachi Port, Port Qasim, and anchorage areas.
Authorities have also set an ambitious target of conducting 70 to 100 bunkering operations per month during 2026, reflecting strong demand and increasing shipping traffic.
The introduction of international-standard bunker barges and a structured licensing system has significantly improved operational efficiency and transparency in the sector.
Karachi Emerging as a Key Maritime Hub
With continuous investment and rising demand, Karachi is steadily positioning itself as an emerging regional bunkering hub. The availability of multiple fuel types—such as VLSFO, HSFO, and marine gas oil—brings Pakistan closer to global maritime compliance standards.
The record-breaking fuel delivery not only highlights operational progress but also signals growing confidence in Pakistan’s port infrastructure and its ability to support international shipping at scale.
