ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has imported a much huge amount of sugar during the first seven months of the current financial year. The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics shared this data in their latest report.
Sugar Imports Increase Rapidly
Pakistan imported sugar worth of $17.46 million from July to January. Last year, the country imported sugar worth only $211,800 during the same period. This shows a massive increase of 7,906% in sugar imports only.
In January 2026, Pakistan imported sugar worth of $23.4 million. This was 46.38% higher than the previous month.
Food Imports Also Rise
Pakistan also increased its overall food imports.
- Food imports increased by 7.74% in January.
- During the seven months, food imports increased by 19.26%.
- The total value of food imports crossed $5.5 billion.
Major food items imported during this period include:
- Tea worth $37.65 million
- Palm oil worth more than $235 million
- Dried fruits worth over $11 million
Mobile Phone Imports Grow
Pakistan also bought more mobile phones from other countries. Pakistan imported mobile phones worth $114 million in last seven months. This shows a 31.36% increase as compared to last financial year.
In January 2026 alone, mobile phone imports increased by 33.62%, which is very huge increase.
NAB Launches Investigation in Sugar Case
The National Accountability Bureau has filed a case against a private sugar mills and some officials of the Trading Corporation of Pakistan for their alleged involvement in wrong doing.
The Ministry of Commerce reported the issue after it found problems involving 5,365 metric tons of sugar. The Public Accounts Committee reviewed the matter and sent it to NAB for further investigation.
NAB officials said that some people joined together to misuse government sugar stocks. This fraud caused a loss of around Rs 960 million to the government. NAB Karachi has now turned the initial inquiry into a formal investigation.
