ISLAMABAD: Unidentified thieves have stolen streetlight wires worth an estimated Rs1 million from F-9 Park in Islamabad, leaving a large section of the popular public park without electricity and shrouded in darkness after sunset.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), a security supervisor on duty first noticed that several streetlights in the park had stopped working. When he inspected the area, he found that the electricity wires supplying the lights had been deliberately cut and removed.
The supervisor immediately informed sub-engineer Inayat Ullah Khan, who approached the Margalla police station and requested legal action against those responsible. Acting on the complaint, police registered a case under Section 379 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which deals with theft, and have begun investigating the incident.
Not the First Time
The FIR states that this is not an isolated case. Similar wire-theft incidents have occurred at F-9 Park before, with thieves repeatedly cutting and stealing electrical cables from the site. Officials believe the stolen wires are sold as scrap metal, causing the department recurring financial losses.
Growing Security and Maintenance Concerns
The latest theft has once again left a major portion of one of Islamabad’s most visited public parks without lighting, renewing concerns over visitor safety after dark and the upkeep of public infrastructure. Regular park-goers and nearby residents have urged authorities to install CCTV cameras and increase night-time patrols to deter future thefts.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and further updates are expected as more details emerge.
