Kia Sportage L Hybrid & Sorento PHEV Launched in Pakistan

Lucky Motor Corporation (LMC) has expanded Kia’s hybrid SUV lineup in Pakistan with two major additions: an All-Wheel Drive version of the Sportage L Hybrid, and the Sorento Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) — the first Korean-brand plug-in hybrid to arrive in the country. Bookings for both models are open now at authorized Kia dealerships nationwide.

Sportage L Hybrid: AWD Arrives for the First Time

Until now, Kia’s Sportage L Hybrid was sold only in Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) form in Pakistan. That changes with this update, which brings an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) option to the lineup for the first time, alongside a refreshed FWD hybrid variant.

The hybrid system pairs a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a 1.49 kWh battery, producing a combined 235 hp and 368 Nm of torque through a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The range-topping AWD variant adds a Harman Kardon sound system, a full suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), six airbags, and a 360-degree camera for easier parking — aimed at buyers who want both capability and everyday comfort in one SUV.

Sorento PHEV: Pakistan’s First Korean Plug-in Hybrid

The bigger electrification story is the Kia Sorento PHEV, which joins the existing Sorento lineup of 3.5-litre V6 petrol and Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) variants. It is the first plug-in hybrid from a Korean automaker to be sold in Pakistan; a handful of Chinese brands had already introduced PHEV models locally.

The Sorento PHEV combines a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with an electric motor for a combined output of 249 hp and 367 Nm of torque, driving all four wheels through a 6-speed automatic gearbox. A 13.8 kWh battery gives it a claimed all-electric range of up to 66 km on the WLTP test cycle — enough to cover most daily city commuting without touching the petrol engine.

As a seven-seat family SUV, the Sorento PHEV also comes with a premium BOSE sound system, rounding out a package built for buyers who want space, comfort, and lower running costs together.

Booking Amounts: What Buyers Pay Upfront

Kia dealerships across Pakistan are now accepting partial bookings for all three new variants:

Sportage L FWD HEVRs. 2,000,000 (Rs. 20 lac)
Sportage L AWD HEVRs. 2,500,000 (Rs. 25 lac)
Sorento AWD PHEVRs. 3,000,000 (Rs. 30 lac)

Buyers can visit their nearest authorized Kia dealership for details on variant availability, expected delivery timelines, and the full booking process.

Why Final Prices Haven’t Been Announced Yet

LMC says ex-factory prices for both new models will be confirmed only once the government clarifies the applicable federal sales tax — and that delay is tied to a bigger shift underway in Pakistan’s auto sector.

Since July 1, 2026, hybrid vehicles in Pakistan have been taxed at a 25% sales tax rate, after an earlier concessional rate expired. However, a new Auto Policy (AIDEP 2026-31) is expected from the federal government sometime in August 2026, and early drafts suggest a two-tier structure: conventional hybrids (HEVs) may be taxed around 9%, while plug-in hybrids and other vehicles classified as “New Energy Vehicles” could get a much lower 1% rate.

If that structure is approved as drafted, the Sorento PHEV could end up priced more competitively than expected relative to standard hybrids, since it qualifies as a plug-in model. This is the main reason Kia and other automakers are holding off on final pricing until the policy is officially announced.
