Pakistan’s men’s hockey team qualified for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 after a thrilling 4–3 comeback epic victory against Japan in the semi-final of the World Cup Qualifiers in Ismailia, Egypt. The epic win ended Pakistan’s eight-year absence from the global tournament.
Pakistan started the match strongly and took the lead in the 9th minute when Imad Muhammad scored a field goal. Japan equalised in the 21st minute and then took control of the match. The Japanese side scored two more goals in the third quarter to move ahead 3–1, putting Pakistan under heavy pressure.
However, Pakistan made a remarkable comeback in the final quarter. Abubakar Mahmood scored in the 52nd minute to reduce the deficit. Just three minutes later, Sufyan Khan equalised to make it 3–3. Soon after, Afraz scored the winning goal in the 57th minute, completing a stunning turnaround for the Green Shirts.
Goalkeeper Ali Raza also played a crucial role in the closing moments. He saved a Japanese penalty stroke, which helped Pakistan protect their narrow lead until the final whistle.
The victory secured Pakistan’s place in the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, which will be held in Belgium and the Netherlands. It will be Pakistan’s return to the tournament after they last appeared in the 2018 edition.
Pakistan have been impressive throughout the qualifiers. The team remained unbeaten in the group stage, defeating China (5–4), Malaysia (5–3), and Austria (4–2) before reaching the semi-final.
With this victory, Pakistan have also reached the final of the qualifying tournament, where they will face England. The final will be played in Ismailia, Egypt, as Pakistan look to continue their strong run in the competition.
