Karachi, Pakistan — Traders in Karachi have raised alarm after a group of individuals, allegedly posing as officials of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA), reportedly harassed business owners in one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs.
According to a written complaint submitted to the Chairman of the FBR, the incident occurred on January 31 at around 4:00 pm in Jodia Bazaar, where approximately 10–12 men claiming to be FBR and PSQCA officials entered a shop without notice.
The complainant, Sohail Qadri, a long-time trader in the area, alleged that the group threw merchandise on the floor, damaged goods, and demanded production certificates, accusing him of selling unregistered products.
When Mr. Qadri asked the purported officials to show their official identification or written authorization, the group reportedly failed to present any legal documents and resorted to threats instead, heightening suspicions about their legitimacy.
The traders’ letter further claims that three members of the group identified themselves as police personnel from the Mitha Dar Police Station, despite lacking any search warrant or legal authority to conduct such an operation.
Mr. Qadri’s complaint noted that subsequent inquiries at the local police station revealed that the alleged raid might have been orchestrated by a business rival, pointing to the misuse of state institutions’ names for intimidation.
An individual named Asif Majeed, operating under the alias Kashif Zia, was cited in the complaint as possibly being behind the incident. The letter claimed that he is under investigation by both the FBR and PSQCA for alleged sales tax evasion involving millions of rupees.
In response to the complaint, sources close to the FBR Chairman denied conducting any such joint operation, and the PSQCA has reportedly launched its own internal inquiry into the matter.
Traders Demand Investigation and Protection
In his appeal, the trader urged the FBR to order a transparent and impartial investigation, and called for strict action against those impersonating government officials and harassing the business community.
This incident comes amid growing concerns over scams and fraudulent impersonations of government authorities in Pakistan, where individuals often misuse names and logos of official institutions to harass or deceive the public. Authorities have repeatedly warned citizens to verify identities and official credentials before complying with any enforcement actions.
